The body is where the inner world of imagination, intention and desire meets the outer world. As the body responds to the animated conversation between inner life and the space through which one moves heightened energies arrive. Integrated Movement Fundamentals (IMF) is the Total Body Connectivity training at the heart of Valerie Dean’s innovative approach to movement and performance training developed over 25 years of national and international experience. IMF inspires her movement, creation and performance workshops – Gravity/Anti-Gravity, Radiant Performance, Energy, Memory and Space and guides her private practice. IMF is anchored in Bartenieff Fundamentals, the Developmental Patterns, Touch for Repatterning, Active Imagery, and the intricate web of fluid systems in the body. IMF uses all these systems of knowing, perceiving and moving in a playful exploration of connectivity patterns. IMF maximizes movement potential by enlivening the dynamic interplay between functional efficiency, embodied technique and individual expression. Moving from Total Body Connectivity engages the whole self, creating movement that is deeply personal, transformative, and generous. This workshop is open to dancers, circus artists, actors, musicians, and singers.
Valerie Dean has a true passion for movement, whether it’s human or animal behavior, the secret life of water, the movement contained in a photograph, the traces of emotion and memory that water, pigment and brush leave on paper. For more than 25 years her curiosity, innovation and sense of adventure have fueled her performing, teaching and directing both nationally and internationally. A Certified Laban Movement Analyst and Bartenieff Fundamentals practitioner and an ISMETA Registered Somatic Movement Educator, she has guided circus artists, actors, dancers and musicians to achieve technical mastery and self-expression. These artists have included medal winning circus artists, Juno award winning singer/songwriters, high performance competition athletes and musicians. Her own movement theatre company, KLAUNIADA, has toured throughout North America, Mexico and Europe and has been supported by the Canada Council, the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec and the American arts funding agencies. As a director of movement theatre and master teacher she has been an instructor in professional and university training programs in Canada and the United States. In Montreal’s circus arts community she is known for building bridges between traditional and contemporary methods of training, creation and performance. In France, the U.S. and Québec, she has worked with individual circus artists, alternative circus companies, the École nationale de cirque, the Big Apple Circus and the Cirque du Soleil. Valerie is currently an Instructor at the National Theatre School.
