“Peters’s workshop reconnected me to my inner beast.” (Gerard Reyes)

Inside these workshops I experiment with and question presence, focus, and availability through exercises and improvisations, both free and directed. What do we escape? What do we transcend? “To be” vs “ To seem”. The object/subject. The social masks, the classes, the codes, the signs. How do we put our fingers on the pulse of these paradoxes, paradigms, this complexity that carries the performing arts? How can we get around or redirect the constraints and obstacles, and use them? Here what resonates with me is the human, with its faults, ambivalence, grey zones, and its imperfection in being. In summation, its defining features. It’s with this material, these states that we fabricate, invent the very substance of these workshops. The raw material of humans that participates. Exploration of : hold and release, abandon, absence, to forget everything in mastering this. Listening, to be on the lookout, to lose oneself. The duration, the silence, the chaos, space and time, the luxury of flying from time to time! To blur the path, the borders between dance and theater and performance art. The non-playing game, representation, anti-dance through trance, minimalism, repetition, up until hyper-expressionism. In brief, to enter into this workshop like entering an experience in a state of waking, survival, and adaptation. Something initiatory, a ritual!

An interdisciplinary intergenerational live art maker, Peter James works with dance, theatre, performance, circus while blurring boundaries and confusing performance and representation codes as much as possible. He has been doing this for thirty years in France, Belgium, Toronto and Québec. He is a playwright, art director, performer and artistic coach for his own projects and for other artists including Nicolas Cantin, Manuel Roque, Dana Michel, Stéphane Gladyzewski as well as at the National Circus School.

All workshops are for professional performing artists. Some require advanced dance training.
