This hybrid contemporary dance class combines floor and standing exercises, accessible choreographic sequences, and improvisation to foster movement, expression, community, and creativity in a fun and relaxed atmosphere – with great playlists.
Classes begin with somatic and functional movement practices that develop mobility, coordination, strength, stamina, balance, and ease. We work with weight, momentum, breath, rhythm, and range of motion, gradually building physical and perceptual awareness.
Through improvisation and choreography, we explore sensation, imagination, musicality, time, space, and relationships as sources for individual expression and collective creation.
You will have opportunities to:
· Develop physical awareness, mobility, coordination, and strength
· Explore movement through sensation, imagination, and improvisation
· Learn accessible choreographic material
· Improvise alone, with partners, and in groups
· Develop creativity, confidence, playfulness, and connection
· Contribute to a collective creation
A 12-week journey & collective creation
The session is designed as a 12-week progression, with classes building on skills, ideas, and relationships developed along the way. Together we will gradually create material for a piece.
In December, we will share an informal showing of our explorations with friends and family. The work may then continue toward a performance in the spring for those who would like to take it further. Participants are encouraged to register for the full 12-week session so they can experience the progression and contribute to the creation. 6-week packages and individual drop-ins are also available.
This class is for all levels of experience. You don’t need to be a contemporary dancer or have previous improvisation experience. Exercises and movement material can be adapted, and participants are encouraged to work at their own level.Consent practices are integrated into the class, with options to adapt, modify, or opt out of proposed material.
Praxis classes are an opportunity to discover what becomes possible when we respond to ourselves, to others, and to our environment.
