Objective

Reclaiming the Body is a class that aims to explore free dance movement in order to become aware of each of the body’s physical and cognitive abilities, both in an intimate and social environment, while respecting each person’s abilities and desires and without any aesthetic or performative intention. My main inspirations come from yoga, Gaga dance, and the Feldenkrais method. Designed for all body types and with a deep desire to create a safe and trusting space, this semi-guided class aims to be an introductory tool to movement, allowing participants to loosen up their bodies and deconstruct blockages and prejudices through play. Some important concepts in the class include inclusivity, embodiment, fun, and somatic practices. Some important notions in the course: inclusivity, embodiment, fun and somatic practices.

Content

The Body Reappropriation course aims to create a space of trust in order to play with the limits of individual abilities. You are invited to become aware of your physical and cognitive boundaries, while seeking to push them a little further each time, in accordance with your desires. The exercises will use movement in a fast or slow context, on the ground or in space, solo or with partners. The exercises are and will always be adapted to each person’s abilities and needs in order to prioritize the pleasure of movement. It is recommended not to wear shoes during the class in order to take full advantage of the dexterity of our feet.

Biography

Over the past 10 years, Benjamin has had the opportunity to experiment with several body-based practices such as yoga, the Feldenkrais method, massage therapy, and various forms of contemporary dance and somatic practices. A member of the RQD, he is also certified in Critical Sexuality Studies and is currently pursuing a DESS in Somatic Education at UQAM. His approach to movement is inspired by the embodiment of feminist theories and queer perspectives, as well as various holistic practices of the lived body. The course “Reappropriation of the Body” was born out of all these experiences, influences, and the desire to pass on the knowledge he has acquired about movement and the body.
