Objective

The Wabanaki Confederacy includes the First Nations Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, and Abenaki. Being Wolastoq, Ivanie will share certain words in the Wolastoqey language that describe important aspects of this culture. You will then be invited to embody them during group explorations.

The orientation of movements and displacements will be determined in such a way as to position you to better receive the knowledge intrinsic to the culture. Since the principle of interrelation is fundamental to the research, you will also have the opportunity to develop an increased sensitivity to the common movements of the group, reminiscent of the synergy of waves.

Lysanne O’bomsawin will begin each day with an hour of traditional Abenaki dance.

Biography

Choreographer, performer, and Wolastoq and Québécois curator, Ivanie Aubin-Malo was awarded the Montréal Dance Prize in the Revelation category in 2023. In November 2024, Ivanie created Wahsipekuk: Beyond the Mountains, an interdisciplinary piece in the form of a revived tale invoking the Wabanakiyik giants, which premiered at the Agora de la danse. Since 2020, she has founded and coordinated the event series for the MAQAHATINE collective, which connects Indigenous movement artists to facilitate the sharing of cultural and technical knowledge and to encourage collaborations. Based in L’Islet (QC) in Wolastokuk, in the Wolastokuk territory, Ivanie is involved in a project to establish a Wolastoqey cultural center in the region to allow members to reconnect with their community through cultural and artistic events.
