Biography
Tiera Joly Pavelich is a dance and electronic music artist based in Tiohtiá:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal. Tiera trained formally at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre before completing their undergrad in Contemporary Dance and Psychology at the University of Concordia. She has presented her choreographic works at; Montreal St-Ambroise FRINGE festival, Cabaret Tollé, Bouge d’ici, Camp_IN (Mexico, San Luis Potosí), Carte Blanche, VAV Gallery and Lots of Love Festival.
I love to make score based choreography that relies on compositional intuition. I approach music composition from a choreographic lens and enjoy experimenting with deconstructing popular music structure. I often think through the lens of work, labour, capitalism/resisting capitalism, chronic injury/disability, perceived effort, rest, relational ecosystems, relational dynamics, value hierarchies and physical exertion.
Project Details
Treating Emily Brontë’s novel Wuthering Heights as a performative score, Scoring the Heights, emerges as a non-linear performance piece that moves through a distant, gothic abstraction of Kate Bush. It is a solo work in which I reflect on being in two places, embodiments, and practices at once. In this solo, I yearn to evoke spontaneous melodies, compositions, and choreography in an effort to map my personal and artistic lineage. This is a work in which I call to the unknown through evocation and improvisation. It is a partnership with a microphone, mic stand and coat. It is in alliance with these materials that I dance with the unknown and project my present into an imagined future.
