JOIN US IN OPENING DOORS FOR ARTISTS
2024-2025 Fundraising campaign
As a not-for-profit organisation, Studio 303 relies on your donations to fulfill its mission to support artists engaged in critical and experimental process, in dance and specifically Queer and racialized.
Since 1989, Studio 303 has been opening doors, creating opportunities for artists to experiment, grow and connect. Your support sustains this haven for artists who push beyond the mainstream, ensuring that access to the arts remains open to all.
Looking through our archives, we’re inspired by all the talent that has moved through our space and that is currently creating within it. Meet some of those voices and staff members here :
My residency at the studio was pivotal—an essential step before taking my work to Tangente. With the right support, I reconnected with my creation and refined it in preparation for my performances. Since then, this space has become a place I call home, where I feel both grounded and inspired to create.
“I had just started my position as communications coordinator for Studio 303 from a corporate job. That day, Marie-Reine, an artist-teacher leading a professional Waacking workshop, stopped by the office to invite us to a cypher happening in the next room. Curious, I followed—and what I saw took my breath away. In the studio, a vibrant circle of dancers cheered each other on, their energy filling the space with raw joy and freedom. It was more than movement; it was a moment of artistic liberation, of community, of support. And at that moment, I knew I was in the right place.”
“I started here, in this same bright office, in 2013... young and beginning an unpaid internship. I didn’t come from dance or the art/queer sector, yet Miriam hired me. That time holds incredible memories. I learned so much—about ethics in the arts, and about making art itself. At times, the scarcity of our sector drained me, especially in spaces like Studio 303, which choose ethics and independence over conformity. I stepped away a few times, but always found my way back.”
“My first experience with Studio 303 was during the pandemic, through an online whacking workshop, a dance form born in the queer BIPOC community and not often seen in the professional dance world, led by the incredible Munezero Axelle. For the first time in my career, an institution didn’t question my identity as a professional dancer, and seeing Munezero Axelle—a Black woman like me—leading the workshop made me feel deeply seen. Studio 303 recognized my art practice as professional; that validation was transformative.”
“To me, Studio 303 is a creative sanctuary. Over the years, it has been a space where I can explore movement—both individually and collectively—bridging emerging artists with seasoned practitioners, all while embracing inter-, trans-, and cross-disciplinary work. The interplay between solo and group dynamics pushes me beyond my comfort zone, blending diverse practices into one vibrant experience. It’s a lab for learning, experimentation, and discovery—a rare, nurturing space where senses and creativity intersect. Above all, it’s a vital haven for sensory and emotional expression in art.”
“I feel a deep sense of pride in being able to care for a space dedicated to creation, to pour as much love into it as those who came before me. But above all, I feel incredibly privileged to witness the journeys of the artists who come through 303 and to support them as best I can throughout their various processes. [...] There’s something about taking care of a place, with all its little quirks, and paying attention to the details that also makes me think of the openness and celebration of the uniqueness of my colleagues and the artists we support—something profoundly human at 303 that, for me, remains unmatched.”
“Studio 303 has always been open to welcome all forms of artistic practices (...) and has been an important part of me developing the krump community. It is also a space that has been extremely supportive of my creation projects. I had a chance to have several residencies notably with the solo piece Anima/Darkroom that I choregraphed with Lucy May, my new solo Retraced, as well as many other initiatives.”
"At a time when my DIY, queer, and interdisciplinary artistic practice had little room to grow, I discovered Studio 303. Its presence in the artistic ecosystem gave me hope — for the first time, I felt understood, seen, and supported, both by its history and its forward-thinking vision. [...] Driven by a deep need, I absorbed new ways of working, practical tools, and critical insights. I remember the joy of having access, the new connections, and the creation of unusual performances — but above all, the deep relief of finding a space and an artistic community committed to care, always."
“Studio 303 empowers creators to take risks, find their voice, and to grow. Whether emerging or established, artists are supported here not because of accolades, but because of their vision. Maybe you’ve attended a show, taken a workshop, or witnessed the remarkable work that grows during a residence. If so, you know: Spaces like this don’t just happen. They are nurtured, sustained, and fiercely protected by a community that believes in their importance!”
