Objective

The workshop I’m offering focuses on improvisation through the lens of Whacking—or perhaps the lens I personally bring to it. We’ll touch on the basics of whacking and other expressive practices, giving ourselves the opportunity to explore the physical and creative plurality that lives within us.

This workshop aims to encourage each participant’s individual expression through the elements that make up Whacking, as I have experienced it. Through various exercises, we will take the time to become aware of our choices and commit to them, in order to develop a deeper sense of presence with ourselves.
The exercises shared are inspired by my personal Whacking practice and my Trigger Point research, which explores the motives behind my movement and the active listening required in improvisation.
Please note that this is, above all, a movement-based workshop that requires a willingness to engage physically, particularly with the upper body.

Content

We will explore:
-Various types of coordination
-Physical dynamism (😊)
-Our individual perceptions and feelings of the music
-Different ways of relating to our environment (the music, the space, the people around us)
-Different ways of connecting with our inner worlds
-different contexts of exploration (individual exercises all at the same time, improvisation exercises 2 by 2 or in small groups, cypher…)
-Certain forms of theatricality and/or emotional expression
-And maybe more!

This workshop is open to anyone interested in taking part. All exercises will be adaptable to each participant’s abilities.

Biography

Inspired by all forms of expression and by naturopathy, Marie-Reine MQueen Kabasha combines her love for movement and her passion for sharing in all her practices. From freestyle to theatre to teaching, every opportunity for exchange nourishes her.
Active in the Montreal dance scene since 2013, she has had the opportunity to work with creators known for their refined and versatile artistic language, some of whom are prominent figures in street dance in Montreal as well as internationally. Notably, with EBNFLOH, Tentacle Tribe and Ma Dame Paris. More recently, she has also been working with Brigitte Poupart, Caroline Laurin-Beaucage, Helen Simard, and Grand Poney.
At the same time, she has developed a growing interest in research and creation, and since 2019 has been working on her own artistic language through a research project called “Trigger Point” and her creation Ce qui m’habite. Through this work, she continues to commit herself to her first gestural love: Waacking/Whacking.
“Improv was very well guided and inclusive. This allowed me to understand myself when I freestyle in a cypher. I feel freer and skilled.” Sybille
