BIOGRAPHY

Fili 周 Gibbons (we/they/them) are an interdisciplinary artist, musician and recording engineer of mixed Chinese and Canadian ancestry based in Tiohtià:ke / Montreal.

Identifying as a transgender system, their work weaves plural practices of cello performance, audio production, improvisation, internal arts, and Chinese geomancy, combining these to create sensorial tapestries of memory and embodiment. Inspired by studies with teachers of qigong, butoh, traditional music, and deep listening, their practice traces an intricate relation between sound, ways of being, and the moving body.

They have been invited to create original performances (Festival Accès Asie / OBORO, PHI Centre, Sight + Sound), and frequently accompany other artists in audio productions (Yaya Diallo, Rajni Shah), cello recordings (Devon Bate, Jeremy Dutcher), and sound design for 3D / VR experiences (World Creation Studio, Marie LeBlanc Flanagan).

PROJECT DETAILS
Soundbody Archive is an interdisciplinary performance project that explores the interconnection between sound, movement, and queer embodiment. Developed by Fili 周 Gibbons (we / you / they), the residency will deepen a personal movement language informed by music performance, somatics, and Chinese internal arts such as neidan and qigong — relevant to ongoing interdisciplinary performance works: Steps of Yu (2024) and [ Pleasure Spaces x 五 ] (2025). The residency explores how movement practice can be developed in conjunction with sound, memory, choreography and expansive ritual space. How can sound and movement enhance one another through their affective potencies? Drawing from talismanic practices (fulu), contemporary dance, and collaborations with movement artists from the community, the project will result in the creation of three short mnemonic choreography sequences — similar to taiji forms — which involve the body in connection to sound production and diffusion. These will be performed and documented in the form of video art capsules.
