In this laboratory, participants explore puppetry, collage, ritualized action, and material transformations to develop their own performing objects using a variety of techniques.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own objects, practices, and skills to the session.
Each class will begin with a warm up that activates the link between body and mind. Participants will then be guided through creative prompts that think through various themes centered around the relationship between material, ritual action and embodiment.
We will play dress-up, perform duets with objects, and create props and masks. Readings, artist studies and group discussions will ground our practice.
The full session will end with an informal performance showing and/or show and tell.
Jordan Derron Brown (b. 1996, Silver Spring, MD) is a multidisciplinary artist working in sculpture and performance. Informed by masquerade storytelling and traditional crafts, he works across disciplines to investigate the boundary between memory and dream. As a facilitator, he creates learning experiences for diverse audiences that explore the embodied wisdom contained in craft processes. His workshops teach how craft develops the intuition, regulates the nervous system, and deepen one’s capacity to feel. This work trains sensitive, attuned craftspeople empowered with the ability to fashion alternate realities. He holds an MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
This workshop is supported by the Conseil de la formation continue arts et culture de Montréal (CFC) in collaboration with Studio 303. The CFC’s continuing education activities are supported by the Intervention-Compétences program, thanks to the financial participation of the Quebec government.
