Objective

This is a contemporary movement improvisation class that channels the participants’ material and existential state of aliveness into dancing.

In the class we will sense into the rich inner space of our bodies, plus dynamic external inputs (sound, rhythm, touch, form, others). Through this sensing we will navigate the blurred gap between internal and external space to enter into juicy solo and relational dances. Through these dances we orchestrate an agentive relationship to time—tasting our delicious, temporary, aliveness.

Through solo, duo and group improvisations, participants will practice confident, intuitive decision making, as well as sensitive listening and responsiveness. Bring your curiosity, pleasure seeking tendencies, risk taking abilities and the soft animal of your body.

Content

The class is comprised of improvisation exercises and scores. Some scores were developed by Lara and others by artists and teachers from her dance lineage (who will be named during class.)

To dance our juicy temporary aliveness, movement exercises and scores will explore:

“Individual body” — form, sensation, imagination, intuition
“Expanded body”— touch and tactility, being witnessed and accompanied, kinaesthetic empathy
“Sound body” — movement relations with sonic texture, metered rhythm, arrhythmic time

This course is designed for amateur and professional dancers alike. Drop-ins are possible. Yet, the class materials build on themselves over time. Exercises are adaptable; consent and listening are part of the practices.
