Objective

Can we perceive, construct, and perform animate relationships that are more-than-human? Can we become the architect of guardian and protector energies during times of collapse? How must we attune ourselves to the dynamics of embodied intelligence, dream logic, ancestral wisdom and living cycles – co-existing in radical gestures amid the malevolent forces shaping our times.

Content

Lineages: We will engage with diverse strategies, notably IndigiQueer Spectulative Futurities, Mātauranga Māori (Indigenous-Māori knowledges) and BODYWEATHER* philosophy, which questions what the body is, where awareness and consciousness arise, and how the imagination functions within the practice.

This workshop offers processes that are playfully questioning the bedrock of how we live our lives. Be prepared to work to rhythmic tracks that increase heart rate and temperature.

Spheres of Inquiry include:

  • MB – dynamic movement training to cultivate strength, grounding, flexibility, and co-ordination.
  • MANIPULATIONS – partner and group-based tactile stimulations to awaken the senses.
  • IMAGE WORK – movement creation through refined, image-based improvisations.

*NB: BODYWEATHER philosophy was developed by Min Tanaka and his Mai-juku performance company in Japan. Tess de Quincey was a member of Mai-Juku (1985-91), then introduced the BODYWEATHER practice into Australia in 1989. Victoria Hunt joined De Quincey Co. to begin an apprenticeship in 2000.

Biography

Victoria Hunt (she/they) is an Australian-born Māori performance artist with ancestral affiliations to Te Arawa, Rongowhakaata, Ngāti Kahungunu and Pākehā (Irish, Scottish, English, Finnish).

Grounded in Mātauranga Māori, Body Weather philosophy and IndigiQueer resurgence, Hunt traverses the politics of Rematriation – inserting bodies into frameworks of power as active sites of memory for future ancestors.

As a dancer, choreographer, director, dramaturg, photographer, and filmmaker, Hunt examines Indigenous epistemologies within diasporic concepts of identity formation and belonging. Their award-winning works have toured across six continents.

Hunt received the 2025 Creative Australia Dance Fellowship and is artist-in-residence at Carriageworks, Eora (Sydney). Their latest work, KŌIWI, was commissioned by the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Precarious Movements: Choreography and the Museum, which gave rise to a ‘protector’ entity which is currently touring the world.

Hunt was a founding member of Sydney dance company De Quincey Co. (2000-2024); Rex Cramphorn Theatre Fellow (2016); Australian Space Agency Research Assistant (2021-24); PhD candidate; co-founder of Weather Beings, a 2Spirit collective with Singing Thunderbird artist Moe Clark (Tio’tia:ke/Montreal)
