Devised and facilitated by Michael Martini, Bien Reçu (No Hard Feelings) is an interdisciplinary proposal combining contemporary dance with tropes from reality TV, including elimination and a cash prize. It’s a playful event which explores how community is constructed, celebrated, and challenged by competition.

The concept: 7 dancers improvise to ambient sound in front of  an audience and videographer. In increments, they must vote to eliminate members of the group, one by one. There is no verbal communication amongst the group; votes are private. Game master Michael Martini presides. The sole remaining dancer at the end of the improv claims the grand prize: an artist fee of $300.

Inspired by the equally competitive and communal edge of sports or vogue balls, and activated by real-life money, the performance looks with tongue-and-cheek humour at the fun that can be had when hard and soft values oscillate. Here, the artists play dress-up with the actual climate of scarcity that surrounds us.

About the artist: Michael Martini is a queer performance artist who makes works for various contexts. Notably, his co-creation Ça a l’air synthétique bonjour hi, in which audience members are paid to complete tasks onstage, has received attention and accolades since its inception in 2018. Productions by Michael Martini will appear in the 2022-23 seasons Tangente Danse and La Chapelle Scènes Contemporaines. His proposals are highly social, DIY, and oscillate between the banal and flamboyant.
