CONTENT //  Through practice we will assemble a mini tool box to make choreographies. Movement will be the starting point. We’ll practice a variety of scores. Once embodied we’ll give space to the participant’s interests & desires to develop personal versions for these approaches. We will explore forms for personal practice – by noticing what recurs, what is moving and what is of interest – and how to enact these interests.

A score is a list of instructions that directs action. A score can be something written (a representation of the performance itself) or what is written can act as a source for what will be performed. Following a score can be the doing of movement instructions and also the act of reading, understanding and interpreting the score. Scores can accept all styles and provide a structure for performers to follow or to sabotage. Scores can support practice and ways of working collectively and individually. Working with scores developed with the New York post-modern dance movement of the 1960’s and 70’s.

This workshop is open to… Visual artists, dancers, actors, anyone who is interested in choreographic practices and wants to develop a self directed independent practice by trying things, staying fluid, being in conversation with themselves and others.

Katie and Sybille will co-teach this class by developing and exchanging ideas about scores, teaching, as well as movement and choreographic practices. Two classes will be led by both Katie and Sybille together, the other classes will be led by one or the other teacher.

BIO // Montreal Dancer/Choreographer Katie Ward’s performance scores are works that index reality, setting conditions for disrupting the way we see it so that our relationship to it may be re-imagined. Katie is currently working on solo dance called Anything Whatsoever and a group piece called imaginationreality. Both works highlight performer’s subjectivities by accessing their own body archives. These are minimalist-maximalist pieces in which Katie makes a place for things of all kinds: whole things, parts of things, serious things, refined things, wild things… Past works include group works: Infinity Doughnut, Rock Steady, Human Synthesizer, and solo: Matière Grise.
Katie holds a Master of Theatre Practises from Artez University, in Arnhem Netherlands.

Hanna Sybille Müller is a choreographer, dancer and dramaturge living in Montréal. Her performance scores focus on language, movement and its interrelations. Sybille is interested in the language’s and the body’s strange, magic and ordinary potencies. Currently she is developing in collaboration with Erin Robinsong the score for Polymorphic Microbe Bodies, a dance work that explores the microbial worlds of the body, translating scientific information into experiential knowledge. Recent works include revolutions (2018), transposition (2016) and a social choreography called Soup-text Series (2010-ongoing).
She studied dance at the Rotterdamse Dansacademie (RDA) and received a diploma in media studies at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) in 2012.
